Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse
This part of the world missed out on witnessing a rare winter solstice lunar ecplipse that happened on 20th/21st December. The full moon was covered by the Earth's shadow as it passed between the moon and the sun.
What's special about this lunar eclipse is that it coincided with the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. According to NASA, this is the first time a lunar eclipse has coincided with a solstice since 21st December 1638 and the next one will happen in 2094.
Here's a beautiful time lapse video by William Castleman of the winter solstice lunar eclipse filmed on 21st December between 0610hrs GMT and 1003hrs GMT from Gainesville in Florida, USA.
