The Culturist Film Club #1: Rien à foutre / Zero F*cks Given

Starting this September, I’m launching The Culturist Film Club at Alliance Francaise in Dubai, a bi-monthly film screening event presented by me, including an introduction and post screening discussion (sometimes with a guest speaker).

The Culturist Film Club started online in the summer of 2020 when most of us were at home, but I’d now like to host this in a physical venue. Last summer I programmed a short film series titled PLACES/FACES at Alliance Francaise in Dubai and since then I didn’t have a chance to host more screenings there. Reviving The Culturist Film Club is a way for me to programme and host film screenings at Alliance Francaise, who have been very generous in offering their venue to me and open to the film suggestions I make.

For my first in-person film club, I will screen RIEN À FOUTRE (ZERO F*CKS GIVEN) directed by Julie Lecoustre & Emmanuel Marre, on Friday, September 16 at 7.30pm. Links to book ticket and location map can be found below.

A film about big corporations, the service industry, directionless youth, melancholia and escapism. Dubai and Emirates Airline play a role too.

RIEN À FOUTRE / ZERO F*CKS GIVEN
Directors: Julie Lecoustre & Emmanuel Marre
2021, 110 min, 16+, Belgium/France, French, English with English subtitles

Cassandra (26) is a flight attendant for a low-cost airline. Based in Lanzarote, she’s always willing to take on extra hours and carries out her duties with robotic efficiency. On the side, she just goes with the flow and floats between Tinder, parties and lazy days. When she suddenly gets dismissed, she is forced to return home. Will Cassandre find the force to confront what she was running away from?

The film had its world premiere at the 60th La Semaine de la Critique, Cannes 2021.

“Played by the ever-captivating Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue is the Warmest Color), Cassandre is a 20-something flight attendant who travels from city to city without ever finding her place. She’s highly committed to her job, which is working for a low cost airline named Wing (modeled on Ryanair), and she doesn’t have other goals beyond the dream of one day working for a better company like Emirates.

It’s not something we’ve seen in many movies, and Rien à foutre often feels closer to a work of contemporary photography or video art, capturing the haunting, prosaic beauty of globalized commerce and the 24-hour service industry.”
