Nujoom Alghanem Honored at America Abroad Media’s Awards Dinner
A couple of months ago, I was asked to talk about Nujoom Alghanem’s work for an audio piece that would accompany a video made about her, to be shown at the America Abroad Media’s Awards Dinner where she’d be honoured for her work as a filmmaker and an artist.
The annual event hosted in Washington DC “honors outstanding leaders whose work exemplifies the power of media to inform, educate and empower” and Nujoom Alghanem was one of four who were awarded this year. Other winners included Sally Al Hosaini (writer and director of The Swimmers), Telfaz 11 (a media studio from Saudi Arabia), Arian Moayed (actor - Succession, A Doll’s House).
The Awards Dinner took place on February 28, and I’m glad the video which includes my contribution is now available on Youtube because I was wanted to see how it turned out, and I’m sharing it here.
You can also hear the voice of Lisa Bell-Lechgar (Head of Programming at Medar 39 in Abu Dhabi) who recommended me to Aaron Lobel, founder and president of America Abroad Media who reached out to me to ask if I’d like to do this.
I’ve interviewed Nujoom before and shown her films, but I’ve never had a chance to personally talk about her films and why they matter, so I was very happy to be asked. I’m also glad to see Nujoom Alghanem’s acceptance speech, added below, and it was great to hear her mention the horrific events in Gaza.
