Last Days of Disco by Hind Mezaina and Tulip Hazbar
Last Days of Disco is a research-based multimedia installation I worked on with Tulip Hazbar for March Project 2018, Sharjah Art Foundation’s artist residency programme.
It was a project we worked on during the summer and is part of the new season of exhibitions that opened in Sharjah on September 29.
“Last Days of Disco pays tribute to the 1970–1980s music and entertainment scene in the United Arab Emirates, with a focus on Sharjah during the 1970-1980s.
Inspired by Dune Beat Disco, a mobile disco launched by the Dubai-based magazine What’s On that travelled across different emirates, Last Days of Disco takes the format of a dance floor set-up, playing sounds and mixes and featuring artefacts of the time, including an archive of promotional materials about music events, clubs and entertainment venues.
Examining the past influence of Western pop culture on the region and its impact on the present, the installation aims to trigger a conversation that contributes to our collective cultural memory. ”
The exhibition is on until January and is located in Ceramics House, near the Calligraphy Museum in Calligraphy Square in Sharjah. It is free to attend and open from 9:00am -9:00pm Saturday-Thursday and from 4:00pm - 9:00pm on Friday.
