Journal Safar: Graphic Design and Visual Culture from the Middle East
Journal Safar is a bilingual magazine (Arabic and English) that focuses on visual and design culture in the Middle East. The magazine was founded in Beirut by Maya Moumne and Hatem Imam from Studio Safar design agency. Launched in 2014, each issue focuses on a theme, its fourth and latest issue is about nostalgia.
The aim of the magazine is to shed light on critical investigation, thinking, and experimentation in the region.
Wael Hattar interviewed Maya Moumne and Hatem Imam for the Tea with Culture podcast which you can listen to by clicking on the play button below. They discuss discuss the reasons behind launching a bilingual magazine, how they choose their themes, how they collaborate with contributors, how they go about producing the magazine independently, looking for funding and finding the right distribution model.
It’s an insightful discussion on dealing with challenges and obstacles, but it’s also about persistence and determination to produce work that is important for now and future generations.
