Interview with Shaikha Al Mazrou

Shaikha Al Mazrou is an artist from the UAE who creates sculptural pieces experimenting with materiality and form and content. She has developed a name for herself during the past few years and her work has been exhibited locally and internationally. Al Mazrou also teaches at the University of Sharjah.

She currently has a solo exhibition “Expansion / Extension” in Dubai until November 1 at Lawrie Shabibi, the gallery that represents her.

Al Mazrou’s practice is anchored in history of art, borrowing formally from minimalism and intellectually from conceptual art. Influenced by artists from the Modernist and Bauhaus Movements - such as Paul Klee, Carle Andre and Wassily Kandinsky - Al Mazrou uses the formal aspects of minimalism to engage in a current fascination with materiality in art.

Often in her works she combines mass-produced materials such as electronic waste or construction materials with color and form, experimenting with these resources to create abstract geometric arrangements. Fascinated by notions of physical space, her sculptures and installations materialize as simple gestures that emphasize the representation of tension, weight and space.

Wael Hattar interviewed Shaikha Al Mazrou for the Tea with Culture podcast to talk about her practice and how it has developed over the past few years. Al Mazrou is very articulate about her works and her practice and hope you enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I did.
