Sharjah Art Foundation Film Screening - Mahanagar (The Big City) by Satyajit Ray
Sharjah Art Foundation is celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema this month and will be screening films by one of the greatest filmmakers of world cinema, Satyajit Ray. The first film screening will take place on Saturday, 7th December at 7.30pm in Mirage City Cinema, an open air cinema located in the Sharjah Art Foundation Art Spaces.
Mahanagar (The Big City) is a critically acclaimed film, and was recently screened at the BFI in London, part of a two month celebration of Satyajit Ray films.
One of my favourite film critics, Peter Bradshaw, described Mahangar (The Big City) as "an utterly absorbing and moving drama about the changing worlds of work and home in 1950s India, and a hymn to uxorious love acted with lightness, intelligence and wit." He ends his review with "The Big City is sublime, a movie to fall in love with."
The Big City, the great Satyajit Ray’s first portrayal of contemporary life in his native Kolkata, follows the personal triumphs and frustrations of Arati (Madhabi Mukherjee), who decides, despite the initial protests of her bank-clerk husband, to take a job to help support their family. With remarkable sensitivity and attention to the details of everyday working-class life, Ray builds a powerful human drama that is at once a hopeful morality tale and a commentary on the identity of the modern Indian woman.
