EPILOGUE: The Future of Print by Hanah Ryu Chung
EPILOGUE: The Future of Print by Hanah Ryu Chung is a beautiful short film exploring the world of print featuring very interesting individuals from the print community in Toronto, Canada.
The film addresses the importance of print, the longevity of the printed book, where print stands in today's world of e-books and what is its future.
Some very heartfelt thoughts are shared in this film. Everyone featured in it share a passion for print, and I am certain the physical printed book will not disappear. It's too valuable to many people for it to disappear. Here's a quote from the film that shares this opinion:
I am not at all worried about the either/or aspect of the electronic books because people will always like clunky little objects and fun toys, and books that have a tactile and paper, and have characteristics that can't occur in the e-book world.
In the history of technology, there's always been an orbiting of the existing technology and a more specialisation, but it's never been an either/or. The worst funny thing that's happened with the e-book is the possibility of either/or. It's as if computer logic went wrong. It's ALWAYS and/also. So either/or, no way.

Please spare 25 minutes of your time and watch this lovely film.
This documentary is a humble exploration of the world of print, as it scratches the surface of its future. I consider this a work in progress. It is built upon interviews with individuals who are active in the Toronto print community and questions whether or not they expect to see the disappearance of the physical book within our lifetime.
The act of reading a “tangible tome” has evolved, devolved, and changed many times over, especially in recent years. I hope for the film to stir thought and elicit discussion about the immersive reading experience and the lost craft of the book arts, from the people who are still passionate about reading on paper as well as those who are not.
