Film still: You’ve Got Mail (Nora Ephron, 1998)

Earlier this year, I started sending out a work-in-progress newsletter titled Happenings. I’ve sent three so far, in February, June and at the start of this month. It includes a few thoughts and words about what I’ve been up to, and information about any exhibitions I’m in or film screenings I’ve organised. I also add a few recommendations of exhibitions to visit or things to see or read.

So far I’ve been sending it to friends and a few peers and colleagues, people that I met at my events, and to whoever subscribed directly via my portfolio website hindmezaina.com.

I now would like to send out something more frequently, at least once or twice a month, and would also like to increase my mailing list. This is mostly because I now no longer have a clear sense of who sees what when I post similar updates on social media, especially on Twitter.
The algorithm on most of the social media platforms prioritise accounts with large followings and paid subscribers, and I refuse to spend any money on them.

Generally, social media isn’t what it used to be, and I’m finding more and more people I like spending less time or posting, including myself. I wrote this in the last edition,

I have been mostly off social media since June, but now slowly getting back to it, although a lot of what I like about social media is being chipped away by very unlikeable people and organisations. I’m not ready to quit it yet, but maybe be more selective on what I post and what I want to see.

Hopefully sending something directly to your inbox will be a more meaningful and effective way to communicate and share information.
In hindsight, I should have launched a newsletter and focused on building a mailing list years ago, but I guess it’s not too late to start now.
