Why can't we find a Palestinian State in the Atlas?
The non-stop flow of devastating news in the past 10 day has been very difficult to process. It’s beyond upsetting seeing the dehumanisation and annihilation of people in Gaza, unarmed civilians, children and adults indiscriminately targeted and killed. A genocide in broad daylight that’s being broadcast live and so many politicians and mainstream media are proving themselves to be on the wrong side of history. What cruel times we live in.
Writing here or posting on social media about anything else feels frivolous and trivial. But I’d like to share this short film, The Road to Palestine (Layla Badr, 1985) as a reminder that this cruelty has been going on for far too long.
16 mm. Produced by the PLO. An animated short film for children. The film is based on the testimony of the girl Laila, who saw some planes while her mother was combing her hair. She looked up at the sky and shouted to her mother, “the planes are sending balloons”. In actual fact, they were thermal balloons, falling directly to their target. The Void Project is currently restoring, with the support of London Palestine Film Festival, films by women filmmakers, that were produced by the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), during what became known as “Palestinian cinema revolutionary era” .
